Isn't the cdn supposed to be transparent to the user.

It is transparent to the end user. Acid is trying to setup a cname on his end to mask the images. Not something a CDN is designed for.

Ah I see what's happening here. Edgecast/Softlayer CDN needs to be "told" to expect different CNAME's, otherwise they just 404 it (Same with CloudFlare which is the first "layer")

I noticed my traffic drop from about 6000 page views and 150 odd clicks per day to 1500 and 30-50 clicks a day maybe after I've changed back to the normal img1.pros links instead of trying to mask it with a CNAME (which isn't possible anymore unless I figure out how to spoof the HOST variable to fool Prosperent's CDN in serving the image.... which is unlikely without double bandwidth on my servers)

Has anyone noticed a huge drop in traffic lately (maybe an algo change in Google)? or am I right to assume that the change I made to get the images working again by using the default links did?

There have been several google algo updates in the past two weeks. I highly doubt it is anything related to your image masking.

and no, there is zero chance of us going back to not using a CDN

Acid, why not cache the images on your end in order to use your sitename?

You might also look at what findbuy.co is doing. They appear to have the images cnamed to their own domain even with the cdn in place.
